Role of ChatGPT in Product Management

ChatGPT here. ChatGPT there. ChatGPT everywhere. Literally.

ChatGPT is one of the hottest topics of discussion currently, and rightly so. The OpenAI-developed Generative AI program sits on top of the GPT 3.5 and GPT 4 LLM models to provide a human-like interaction experience with all the smartness of machines. While there have been instances of ChatGPT providing the wrong inputs or inclining toward biased opinions, there is no doubt that as it learns and interacts more, ChatGPT's accuracy will be augmented, and it will redefine the future of work across industries and functions.

Whether or not it will be a better future lies in our hands as we build guardrails and control mechanisms, but that is a different conversation.

In this article, we will explore how the hottest technology solution in the world can integrate with one of the industry's most sought-after job roles, technical product management.

Technical Product Management

"Behind every great product, there is someone - usually someone behind the scenes, working tirelessly - who led the product team to combine technology and design to solve real customer problems in a way that met the needs of the business" - Marty Cagan, Silicon Valley Product Group.

Technical Product Management is tremendously challenging; anybody who tells you otherwise isn't doing you any favors. That said, it is equally exciting to be at the intersection of understanding customers, business needs, technology advancement, and design thinking.

How does ChatGPT integrate with Product Management?

A product manager works closely with the product designer, developer, testing team, business stakeholders, and, most importantly, the product users to create transformative product suites.

Their day-to-day activities include:

  • Conducting user surveys and leading product discovery initiatives to identify whether a product is worth building
  • Working with the data team to scrutinize product analytics to further the product development process
  • Provide the appropriate customer and business inputs and use cases to the development and design teams for creative problem-solving.
  • Manage stakeholder expectations - both internal and external.

To do all this daily, their planning, communication, vision, data analysis, technology evangelism, and user understanding must be second to none.

Enter ChatGPT. With the AGI, product managers could optimize their day-to-day activities, improve their efficiency to stay on top of all their tasks, and automate processes to save them invaluable time - time better spent with the product discovery team or their engineering team.

But, no matter what AI can achieve, it cannot replicate a product manager's instincts, creativity, and contextual understanding. It is an aid to help bolster efficiencies and automate everyday processes.

What can ChatGPT help with:

  1. Writing PRDs: Product Requirement Documents are mission-critical documents for a product team, and it is the product manager's responsibility to craft PRDs accurately, precisely, and elaborately to aid product development. With ChatGPT and one of our ChatGPT-powered tools, WriteMyPRD, product managers can input key parameters the LLM has to consider while drafting a PRD and sit back as the AI types it out for them. This doesn't mean whatever ChatGPT writes will be error-free, but it is a good foundation to build on.

  2. Analyze User Sentiment: Sentiment analysis is key to user understanding and the product discovery process. With ChatGPT, you can input all your user feedback into the tool and ask the AI to summarize the most common product requests and analyze user pain points to better inform your feature development sprints.

  3. Customer Support: Customer support is an integral aspect of the product lifecycle. It provides valuable insights into product iterations and the subsequent versions of the product. With ChatGPT, a product team/manager can automate email replies, provide immediate redressal, and create a conversation UI for better customer engagement and retention.

  4. Market and Competition Research: You might think I have google for that. But with google, you have to go through a dozen links, chatGPT, on the other hand, delivers singularity. Based on your prompts, it will provide you with a list of competitors, a ready-to-use list. Imagine how convenient it would be if you were running for a stakeholder meeting and had no time to prepare. Lifesaver.

  5. Product Roadmap Ideas: Creative block isn't just for content creators. It is all too well known in the product management ecosystem, and using ChatGPT as a bouncing board for product roadmap ideas will help identify potential opportunities. Please note, ChatGPT might provide obsolete ideas. How they want to use it is up to the Product Manager's discretion.

  6. Summarize long research documents: Long-form research documents and product findings can be input into ChatGPT to be summarized into succinct sticky note-sized takeaways. Extremely useful in saving valuable time for product managers.

  7. Outreach Emails: Imagine writing 100+ outreach emails, each of them personalized. *Shudders!* With ChatGPT, product managers can prompt the AI chatbot to provide a few different drafts in the brand's tone of voice, proofread, and simply hit send.

  8. Draft Survey Questions: Drafting user survey questions is a detailed and important
process. With the appropriate contexts and prompts, ChatGPT could provide you with the first draft of survey questions to work on. It is important to note, ChatGPT might have implicit bias, and it is a product manager's responsibility to filter such questions or rework such questions.

The list is virtually endless. One is only bound by imagination as far as ChatGPT is concerned. It is a versatile tool that can be utilized in a thousand different ways to augment a product manager's productivity and efficiency.
